The FBI recently issued their official crime statistics for 2008. The stats show an overall decrease in crime across the country, but certain types of violent crime remain high.

The statistics are broken down not only by type, but by location all the way down to the county level.

Additionally, the FBI keeps specific statistics on specific crimes such as those committed against police officers.
